yeah, SS is highly replayable. like IVAN. also, why not add robot ninjas? or Mark IV Laser Rapiers?

blob- 09-01-2006

err. Because it has nothing to do with alien ?

Well if I knew jack about coding and such, then I WOULD make a System Shock dungeon, or better, a System Shock ROGUELIKE, alas, I can't code. At all.

I thought it would cool if there were more traps in IVAN, such as bamboo (or choose any other material) spiked pits, or creatures or devices which flip down from the ceiling and entrap your head while other baddies come around and rain blows down on your lower body. You would have to do a strength test of something to try and jump across the pit if you found it. You would also have to do another test to climb out of the pit.

Hehe the head trap if fun. I agree anyway , these would be nice too. The only problem is always the same, who is going to code it.

Assuming HB keeps up these lessons, I'll give it a go. I think the bamboo trap tiger trap holds real promise. You could even string these things up in a row. For instance, if you had 3 traps back to back, a character could still jump across it, but the strength check he would have to make would be 3 times as high. And, if he fell in, he'd have to take spike damage until he reached a wall, then make another strength check to climb out. This would present the player with some serious decisions: Brave the trap? Or find some other route? I can just see it: Mirthful walks down the hall. His perception fails to take account of a slight crack in the ground which signals the presence of a trapped pit. "AWWWhhhhhhhhhhh~!" He falls in taking, taking spike damage. His perception shows him that the trap is 1 x 3 long. He tries to climb out. Fails. He tries to climb out. Fails. Exasperated, he takes damage to wade across the next two adjoining spiked pits until he reaches the other wall. Nice and bloodied, he tries to climb up this wall. Success! He climbs out and advances to the next space... Kerplap! A Ceiling Leech encloses its jaws around Mirthful's head and lifts him into the air! Mirthful tries to curse, but can't speak. Instead, he kicks his arms and legs. He fails to escape. He is exhausted. 2 orcs come up and start whacking at his legs with their axes which saying "Me wants your scalp." Mirthful finally gets manages to escape. He attacks both orcs with his bladed crutches but takes longer to dispatch them than usual because he is tired. "Looks like me be getting yo' scalps, home-orc!" he says while spitting in disgust. Confident that all danger has passed, he trailblazes forth. Kerchink! A valpurium bear trip trips him and traps his torso! The fun would never end, and the violent road would only turn a darker hue of crimson.

You send us some idea, but for now, the very little Blob and I prefer to add Alien stuff, and we already have a lot of idea, at least two quest, some specials objects and monsters. We try to keep the IVAN spirit too ;) For the trap, I don't really try to see the trap code, but I think you can't add a trap like the one you describe without some C coding. I'll make a new thread in the programming section for the coding problem and solution, I encounter 2 or 3 problems ^^

Freelance Berzerker- 09-01-2006

Yeah, I know this would take serious coding. I just didn't want to lose the idea in my head. I thought of this last night after a very full meal while riding on the subway. Such thoughts have the half-life of dreams after you wake up, which is why I just had to post it and give it life.

dalboz- 09-02-2006

ceiling leeches sound like the barnacles in Half-Life.

Freelance Berzerker- 09-02-2006

I remember the concept for such ceiling hangers appearing in the 1979 edition of Monster Manual for the 1st edition of AD&D. I used it in almost every dungeon campaign that I DMed. Then there were also the "icicle chameleons:" dungeon predators who looked exactly like icicles except that they are sharp as swords and fall to impale any warm-blooded creature passing by. Any AD&D players here?

Me. And love this monster too. Actually i never bought the rules books because im no DM but bought every monster manuals. Im really crazy of those. Like the Coat manta monster too. hehe. Evil.

Freelance Berzerker- 09-02-2006

Oh, oh! Remember the rust monster? That is the PERFECT Ivan monster? It pissed me off as much as the elder dark mages do in the game right now. You'd finally get your nice 4,000 GP set of plate mail that you had been dreaming about for 6 months for your fighter. Then you venture forth into some random dungeon. You do pretty well at first do to the ramped up AC. Then before you know it, Kerplap! This thing that looks like a mammoth anteater with mouth tentacles causes all your metal objects (including the platemail) to fall to red rust in a matter of rounds. Then some armed monsters show up and hack you to pieces.

blob- 09-02-2006

Yeah i hated them in nethack. Didnt meet too many monsters in AD&D. We dont need rustmonsters. You might understand that soon * maniacal laugh *

Freelance Berzerker- 09-02-2006

Perhaps you're right. The floating eyes are already a real headache. Once you get high enough in levels, about 3 or 4 or them spawn and follow you everywhere.

How about making this mod a part of the next release?
