Common Sense this thread is for first-time players of IVAN (newbies) who have not played Nethack, or any other similar game. I'll just make a list of what you SHOULD and SHOULD NOT do. contribute!
1. you might want to play some other less difficult roguelike first.
2. never eat kobold, zombie, goblin corpses. they will make you hungrier, get leprosy, and stomach parasites, respectively.
3. don't drink poison or acid.
4. it is always better to run than to fight a monster that is more powerful than you, or if you insist, fight a few rounds then tele the hell out.
5. don't carry too much stuff around, it's bad for your legs.
6. you know you're carrying too much stuff when the word "OVELOAD" appears below your stats. "burdened" and "stressed" are OK, provided that you know the water-running trick (any potion can cure exhaustion, but see no.3)
7.
ASTR=arm strength, how hard you hit/whether you can wield heavy weapons.
LSTR=leg strength, how much stuff you can carry/how hard you kick.
DEX=dexterity, whether you will hit or miss an enemy, also affects trap-setting.
AGI=agility, how fast you move, how well you dodge.
END=endurance, you get more HP for every END point you have.
PER=perception, how far you can see.
INT=intelligence, whether you can harden or change the material of/polymorph into a thing/monster, whether you can sci-talk with NPCs.
WIS=wisdom, how well you can deal with the gods, and also affects scitalking ability.
CHA=charisma, affects the prices at shops,
SIZ=size, how well monsters can hit you.
HP=hit points, how much punishment you can handle. when this goes to zero, you die, though you can also die if your head, torso or groin gets damaged too much.
8. don't carry backpacks full of gunpowder around, it's easy to blow yourself up.
9. "l"ook at your enemies' equipment before deciding whether to flee or fight.
10. keep potions in cans by dipping them into bottles, that keeps them from being smashed. (potions in cans aren't completely safe, though)
11. likewise, keep your wands in boxes, that makes them harder to be broken by spells or strong blows.

1. I have never played Nethack
2. I eat goblin corpses all the time and have never had any ill effects. Orc corpses however might have given me leprosy, I'm not 100% sure. I have gotten the Elpuri ending many times and the chaos ending twice, so I actually might know what I am talking about even though I am no Fatty Cow.
3. yep
4. Fight for a bit then teleport outta there
5. Humbug, If you run around stressed your legs get stronger faster. The key is to run, not walk, and you will have less of an agility penalty. If you get tired then drink water or troll blood or healing potion or pray to Seges.
6. Just walking around burdened will lower your agility. You should run or drop some stuff. You know when you are carrying too much stuff when it says OVERLOAD!
7. DEX I believe it also determines how well you can set traps
AGI also affects how well you dodge traps and enemies
END also determines how long you can RUN
INT must have high enough INT to science talk with some characters/monsters
WIS must have high enough WIS to science talk with some characters/monsters
CHA need 15 char to sci talk with Decos
HP when HP of any vital body segment (head/torso/groin) goes to zero you die. You can die with 35 HP when you first start the game if you get too many shots to the groin.

Well END also rise/lower your hp wich makes more stronger/weaker monsters.
I have only tested nethack, but I didnt like it. IMO dungeon crawler is better ;).
