I'm glad most roguelikes are freeware; even if there was a commercial roguelike for sale, I wouldn't buy it.
There is many roguelike for sale, but they are from japan. For some reasons no commercial rogue likes are made in other countries.
The japan rogue likes are excellent too but they follow a few different rules.
Several of them : Fushigi no Dungeon ( snes ), Chocobo dungeon ( Psx ) , Azure dreams (psx ), dragon crystal ( master system ). They're all worth trying.

I don't have a SNES, PSX or Master system though. emulators?
blob- 06-27-2006
NO. EMULATORS ARE ILLEGAL. AND IF YOU KEEP A ROM MORE THAN 24 HOURS YOU DIE

Sounds to me like Blob must really be into the emu-scene, or he's somewhat rich. Otherwise he'd have the money for all those systems and imported games from Japan.

it's easy to bypass that. just play the game, save it at 23 hours, save the entire thing onto a flash drive, delete it from your computer, give drive to a friend, and take it back. repeat.

Dalboz,
Do you know of any more recent commercial rogue-likes? I think one of the most attractive things about IVAN is that you can potentially keep playing forever (assuming you avoid winning the game).
I just enjoy starting the game and going to plant level to kill a few dozen plants, just for the hell of it sometimes.

Hahaha... Cmon, you DO know nothing happens if you keep them more than 24 hours ?
dalboz- 06-29-2006
yeah, I know. :D just being creative.

Stockpiling ROMS doesn't seem very high profile. I've never heard of any game companies going after people who download them.
chaostrom- 07-01-2006
Actually, roms are legal if the particular game is no longer in production, and is impossible to get otherwise.
dalboz- 07-02-2006
so the SNES games are up for grabs.
Somagu- 07-02-2006
How about we get back on topic here, people, bring this to the SNES thread, if anything.
Also, as part of the topic, I would just like to say, part of the whole fun of the game is to challenge yourself, don't backup saves, don't use artificial limbs, don't glitch out your stats, I have alot more fun that way, but hey, that's just me.
Freelance Berzerker- 07-03-2006
You're right. It is more fun to play games the way they were meant to be played. I usually go legit the first time around. But after that, exploits are just so much fun. They're just begging to be used...
dalboz- 07-03-2006
I think the thing that roguelikes beg you to do is to experiment. there's just always another new thing to try in the dungeons, or maybe the towns.

I'm gonna' start taking courses in Java at my local comm. college next semester. Rogue-likes are so much fun I might as well make my own.
