I just have to share this... This was my first char to make to Gloomy Cave level 8, and my best this far. Full octicron helmet, Fire resistance cloak +4, adamantine mail +3, dragonhide belt of carrying +3, Adamantine boots +4, spider silk gloves of strength +5, and the Artifact mace +8 (the one you get from Mortifier). Confident, I proceeded down to level 8...where I saw with my ESP amulet a room full of orcs, including a general, squad leaders and several officers. I also saw IVAN..I went and talked to him, I got him as a pet, and then I met Vladimir :O Ofcourse, I put "follow me --> yes" to him, and then I returned to attnam in order to fix some broken stuff...after I returned I was thinking about finding a bottleneck, and then kill orcs 1 by 1. Ofcourse, I forgot Vladimir to "follow mode". Now, when I returned first thing I saw was no Ivan (left him on lvl 8 ), and Vladimir running around map followed by around 20 orcs... ofcourse, I stayed put, and thought I would be safe in my "bottleneck". Then, Vladimir ran right next to me and smashed EVERY SINGLE piece of wall around me, and I was surrounded by orcs in matter of seconds. "Horrified by my situation", I ran upstairs but I was followed by an orc, 2 officers and general...I died. What is the lesson? Don't EVER put Vladimir on follow mode...

Doh! How come you guys always make it to the GC3 and beyond? Those *** wolfs haunts my dreams. This time I got killed by the whole pack in a matter of seconds. First the arms, then the legs, and of course they let my head stay on top til I bled to death. Perhaps the game recognice which player that plays the game. I mean, after you have played IVAN for weeks you'll get further than when you started. Even though it doesn't mean you're actually playing better? Perhaps it's just my luck?? :P

Hey, at least you didn't lose your potentially richest character to Bill Gates  ... See my ultimate golem thread, page 2, for details... EDIT: I rarely get to GC3 either...

Bear traps are hilarious
This one might be the funniest destiny ever. I was greedily moving towards UT4 entrance early at the game, when a bear trap snapped my leg (Iron/Steel?). Well, nothing to worry about, I thought, and started to tear my leg off the trap, which usually does no harm. After a few tries, snap. "Your other leg is caught in to bear trap!" Well, am I misfortuned today or what, I thought and went on pulling. Before I knew it, I had both of my hands and my HEAD trapped! Next thing to come was my head being torn off and so I died. Gave me a good laugh, that one.

What got me into IVAN
I honestly haven't played IVAN in months now, though I most likely will after this post. Not I know this isn't the most horrific death ever, but it was my first. I go down the stair, for the first time, and there is a zombie next to me. I was completely clueless of the controls at that point, but I rather assuming that I would simply move into him, and did so. Miss, Miss. It critically hit me In the head, I died. From that point on IVAN was one of those "must tell everyone" games.

Too bad my friends are like crazy in graphics.. And they are too stupid to learn the controls.. Hehe ^^

chaostrom- 04-20-2006

I know exactly what you mean. People put too much emphasis on graphics nowadays. I mean, it's nice and all, but it tends to die quick. What really counts is gameplay 8)

dalboz- 04-20-2006

you're right about that, and I just died because my pet diamond golem stepped on a mine.

Somagu- 04-20-2006

Yeah, I totally feel how both of you feel, one time I went down the stairs and there was a hedgehog next to me, needless to say, with nothing to bash him with, I got my ass kicked. Also, all of MY friends are total dipsh**s who don't know how to play a roguelike, and play a game solely for the graphics, NOTHING else, they are also the kind of people who play CS, and type like a dumbass who is trying to speak 1337 speak, but they can't even spell that right.

Atomic- 04-20-2006

Whoa, I just attempted to reply as if this was part of the Q&A thread. :/ Anyways as I was about to say... did I ever mention walking down the stairs and finding, much to my dismay, the Enner Beast within arms reach and very angry? As for the graphics thing... *shrug* I've tried to get my friends to play IVAN... The both used to play ADOM, but for some reason I can't get them to play IVAN. I geuss they grew tired of roguelikes. One of them plays all sorts of new games on his fancy pants computer, and the other hardly plays anything due to homework.

Jhaerik- 04-21-2006

BTW, whats is a hattifattener? lol Decided to start back playing a bit, UT at the boss, the room/most of the plants were destoryed thanks to Silva, lol, take one step in, died to a lightning to the torso, from a promised char, to a one hit deaths, :(

dalboz- 04-21-2006

a hattifattener is a semisentient being made of electricity. you can probably use one to mine for rubies, diamonds and other stones, since it can zap open walls. speaking of hattifatteners, have I ever told anyone about the time when I tamed one?

chaostrom- 04-22-2006

If I remember proper, it was in response to my question of "what can't be tamed". You said you tamed a hattifattener but couldn't control it, so it was worthless. :P total dipsh**s who don't know how to play a roguelike Hey, to be quite honest, IVAN isn't the easiest game to get a hold of. Took me a couple of days just to figure out the basic controls (heal, pick up, the rest). one time I went down the stairs and there was a hedgehog next to me, needless to say, with nothing to bash him with, I got my ass kicked It's better than walking down the stairs only to find you've crashed a party you shouldn't've ##### ##Z## #KYP# ##H## ##D## # = Balsa wall Z = Zombie K = Kenny Y = You P = Carnivorous plant H = Hedgehog D = Door And no, I ain't bullshittin'

Somagu- 04-22-2006

Woah, what a nasty situation. But yeah, I'm talking about people who go "WTF! THIS GAME HAS NO GRAPHICS! ITS ALL 2D PICTURES AND TEXT EW! *goes off to play CS and talk like a dumbarse*" (actual quote, excluding the CS part)

Jhaerik- 04-22-2006

My only prob with rogue-like is that I have rather bad eye sigh. :P I would not mind a few 16x16 tiles, lol. Really hard for me to actually "see" what's going on in IVAN
