Spawning irregularity
I was in UT 2 when my pet ate a corpse of a mutant bunny. Since they make you transform, a few turns later he turned into an extremely powerful guy called a female war chief or something. Heres the problem: A VERY powerful enemy for my level instantly spawned a few steps away. I promptly died. What im saying is that I think its slightly unfair that a giant monster spawned because of my dog. I didn't tell him to eat the bunny...he just did. In my opinion you should probably code the spawning to only affect the player and allies that don't automatically do stupid things like eat dead rabbits. Just an idea ^_^

The monster you saw was likely unrelated to your dog. Sometimes a magic mushroom will turn into something horrendously powerful because you're horribly unlucky. I'm pretty sure it is possible for your pet's strength to cause the game to generate stronger monsters, but the game usually makes monsters a few steps behind you in overall power -- you usually won't see the effects of being way too strong untill you go down a level.

Heh. You get used to it. Very, very used to it. The devs are evil.
