Ok, here's my spoiler about artifact weapons, I hope this could help.

-Holy broadsword named Valpurus's Justifier +16 (dmg: 20-35)
This is the Ferrari among artifacts. It confers PolyControl, TeleControl, Haste, Infravision and ESP, and it could be easily wielded with one hand. Is it enough?

-Ancient mace named Neerc Se-ulb +6 (dmg 12-22)
It comes already enchanted, and needs 35 ASTR to be wielded with one hand, but even two handed is a very good killing device.

-Mace named Turox (dmg 7-13)
My favourite artifact! It delivers lot of damage and it does not need too much ASTR to wield it with one hand (this means another weapon in the other hand). At times it triggers a magical explosion (think like a fireball with you in the center) who is great when you fight against hordes of enemies, but it affects the player, too. This may be a BIG problem, if you dont have any protection against fire and keep all your potions and scrolls out of your boxes...

-Unholy halberd named Mjolak (dmg 7-12)
Very good polearm. Delivers reasonable damage and also fries foes with a "burst of unholy energy". I dont know if this burst is useful against every enemy. Maybe evil foes are not affected (?). It needs 59 ASTR to be wielded one handed.

-Runed spear named Vermis (dmg 6-11)
Another great artifact. It may be easily wielded with one hand and confers Teleportitis and TeleControl. A very good combo along with Turox.

-Short sword named Saal'thul (dmg 4-8 )
A good secondary weapon. It confers invisibility and being a short sword is very accurate. The bad side is that deliver less damage in comparison to the other artifacts.

Other artifacts (or, more appropriately, unique weapons) are Ivan's weapons, Gorovits family hammer and sickle, both come already enchanted +3 (dmg 7-13 and 6-11)

Artifacts are not unique in IVAN, this means you could find in the same game 2 Vermis, 2 mjolak, etc.

Vermis also randomly teleports the target to a random location (unless he/she/it has TeleControl, but I haven't seen what happens then) on the level if you score a hit.

There are some exceptional weapons that are not considered artifacts, but are still diffrent and generally better then their normal counterparts. They also have special effects, like artifacts, but do not confer intrinsics directly (staves of wonderous smells confer intrinsics INdirectly). They are generally weapons of *foo*. As far as I know, they are:

Flaming longsword of *foo* - As a longsword. Creates permanent light. When it strikes an enemy, it creates a blast of fire which doesn't explode (like a wand of fireballs) and only hits that target.

Thunder Hammer of *foo* - As a hammer. When it strikes an enemy, can create a lightning bolt as a wand of lighting. This lighting bolt seems to have less range and power then a normal wand of lighting, but can still be dangerous to the PC if it is used in a bad location. If you are going to use thunder hammers, a somthing of lighting resist or good groin armour is probally a good idea since 9 times out of 10 misfired lighting bots will hit you in the groin. This is probally a bad joke by the programmers. :p

Staff of Wonderous Smells - As a quarterstaff. Doesn't have a materal (as far as I can tell). It does exceptional damage for a staff and is very durable. When it strikes an enemy in combat, it creates clouds of scents. One of two things can result. If a blue cloud is created, it is dropped on the PC. By staying in the cloud, the PC gains many positive intrinsics - Infravision, Haste, Telecontrol, Polycontrol, ESP, Levitate. If a red cloud is created, it is dropped on whatever enemy you just hit with the staff. It confers many negitive intrinsics, some of which aren't listed on the status line. As far as I can tell, you can get Teleportitis, Polymorphitis, slow, and dizzy from this. You, for apparent reasons, can not lose your sense of smell from the cloud, however. A blue cloud will allways be dropped on the PC and the red cloud will allways be dropped on mobs, no matter what. However, when the clouds are dropped they remain there until they vanish, which means that a monster can wander into a blue cloud or vice verse, which is dangerous.

Whip of Thieving - As a whip. Doesn't have a material (as far as I can tell). It's attacks randomly disarm the target.

Chameleon Whip - As a whip. Doesn't have a mererial (as far as I can tell). It's attacks randomly poly the target. This can be slightly dangerous, or a life-saver depending on what you turn the target into.

I'm pretty sure that the staff of smells can have materials. Every time I've found one, it was called "Ebony Staff of Wondrous Smells".

Yes it has a material. I already found arcanite staffs of wondrous smell.

from item.dat...

whip of thievery - sapphire handle + nymph hair lash

chameleon whip - ruby handle + ommel hair lash

I don't know what the whipping part of a whip is called - 'lash' is a wild guess.

Every item's got materials...

On the whip/lash part, I think the whippy part is just called the "whip".

I should have been less lazy & just checked a dictionary...

"Whip: An instrument, either a flexible rod or a flexible thong or lash attached to a handle, used for driving animals or administering corporal punishment."

So the word I was looking for was probably thong or lash. Another source says that plait might be correct too, but I've never heard this used before. And yeah, it appears that just "whip" does the job too.

Oh, and whilst I've got the dictionary out -

"Cerumen: Ear-wax"

I'm not sure what's more disgusting - drinking urine or eating earwax...? *tries hard to stop thinking about this*

You didn't know? I looked it up first time I found any. Why do you think it trains your INT and WIS? Razz

After I noticed how vile most of the other ommel juices were I studiously avoided looking this up. Then my curiosity (unfortunately) got the better of me today. I'm sure that eating earwax really demonstrates lack of wisdom & intelligence though - Stimpy and Sven (of Ren and Stimpy fame) are really good demonstrations of that.... "I've been collecting my drool in a jar, do you want to see?" - oh god, an ommel is actually Cousin Sven.

Note - those of you who haven't seen Ren and Stimpy will probably think I'm babbling nonsense. You're probably right.

In another thread I've suggested ommel saliva as a better alternative for charisma than ommel tears.

A new evil idea: ommel vomit. Hoping for +2 Endurance +2 Charisma +2 Strength, you drink it... and you die a few turns later, unless you have a very high grade acid resistance. Twisted Evil

While we're talking about artifacts -- the Wiki calls Whips of Thievery, Chameleon Whips and Staves of Wonderous Smells artifacts, along with all the stat-boosting helms, and Armor of Great Health. I don't think any of these should count as "artifacts", especially not Armor of Great Health and the stat-boosting helms. They're just way too common. Also, staves of wonderous smells come in a variety of materials, something which the other artifacts (turox, etc) do not.

I'd change it now but I want to wait and see what others think.

I don't think it'll be useful to pay attention to the difference between artifacts and standard magical items until there are more of both -- as it is now, it'd be inconvenient to look in two sources for what are roughly the same things.
