Well this is an usual bug. Mostly I keep playing for a while and then try again, after a while reading the scroll won't crash the game anymore.

Yeah that friggin scroll of repair bug just nailed me too. It's worse than reviving topics.

I had the same bug happen, but it activated when I tried to repair a broken +5 arcanite staff of wonderful smells that I found on GC11.
