I stood atop the sign outside the house of Huang Ming Pong in the initial village and chose to read this scroll. Now it's asking me what material I want to detect, and there's no way to get out of it--can't escape out of it or use normal commands. I'll have to crash the game the ghetto way and start from the last save. :/

Have you tried entering a material and pressing "enter"? That's what it's for -- you named a material, usually iron, and every square on the level that contains iron will be lit and visible temporarily. Iron is the most detected material due to it being the casing on land mines.
